Austrian Airlines overbooking compensation (denied boarding)

Were you planning a trip with Austrian Airlines, but your flight got overbooked and you were not allowed to board? Do you believe it is unfair? Yes, we believe so as well! It pays to be aware of your rights as a passenger, and the airlinescompensation.com team is here to assist you.

What does it mean to be denied boarding or overbooking? It occurs when a person is denied boarding an aircraft that has been oversold, despite the fact that the passenger has paid for the ticket.

Airlines have noticed that some of their customers cancel their reservations or simply do not show up for their flights, leaving a few empty seats at the time of departure. To generate as much money as possible, the airline wants to ensure that the plane flies at full capacity, hence they occasionally sell more tickets than there are seats onboard.

What options do you have if your Austrian Airlines flight is overbooked?

If your Austrian Airlines flight has been overbooked in the past three years, then you are entitled to the following services:

  • within seven days, a refund of the ticket price or a return trip to the point of departure or re-routing to their final destination;

  • care (refreshments, meals, hotel accommodations, transportation between the airport and accommodation, two free phone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails);

  • All flights of less than 1,500 kilometres are €250;

  • €400 for flights of more than 1,500 kilometres and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres;

  • €600 for flights more than 3500 Kilometers.

Austrian Airlines missed connection compensation

EC261 gives you the option of claiming up to €600 ($700) per person in compensation for any missed flight that causes you to be late for your final destination.

A missed connection occurs when a passenger misses one or more flights during a journey due to the cancellation or delay of one or more previous flights.

There are many causes (technical errors, strikes, etc.) for a flight delay or cancellation, but if the passenger is not at fault, he or she is entitled to compensation for the missed connection.

Passengers are entitled to compensation if Austrian airlines fail to provide an alternative flight or if an alternate flight is offered but does not meet the passenger's needs.

A free check to see if you are entitled to compensation takes only 2 minutes.

What qualifies you for compensation in the event of a missed connection?

The bottom line is that the missed connection must be the airline's fault in order to be entitled to compensation under EU rules. As a result, you may be eligible for reimbursement if:

  • Because of a minor technical issue with the aircraft, your first flight was delayed.

  • The total time it takes you to arrive at your final destination airport is 3 hours or more late (through no fault of your own).

  • Your initial flight was delayed for reasons that the airline did not reveal: if they do not provide you with an explanation for the delay, it is likely that the delay is their fault.

As a result, you are entitled to compensation under Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 if your Austrian flight is delayed for more than 3 hours at the airport of departure or arrival or at the airport of final destination (in the case of indirect flights).

  • All flights of less than 1,500 kilometres are €250;

  • €400 for flights of more than 1,500 kilometres and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres;

  • €600 for flights with more than 3500 Kilometers.

Passengers are entitled to additional services in addition to flight compensation, such as:

  • free meals and refreshments, as well as two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or emails; and

  • free hotel accommodation and transportation between the airport and the place of shelter - when the airline reasonably expects the actual departure time to be at least one day later than the originally scheduled departure time; and

  • reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket or a return flight to the first point of departure, at the earliest possibility - when the delay is at least 5 hours.

Austrian Airlines Strike Compensation

Was your Austrian Airlines flight delayed or cancelled due to airline strikes? According to Regulation EU261, if your flight is cancelled or delayed due to a strike or other interruption, you may be entitled to airlines strike compensation of up to €600 per person.

In the case of a strike, you may be eligible for a combination of benefits under EU Regulation 261:

  • Replacement flight: If your flight is cancelled due to the strike, the airline is required to offer an alternative flight to your final destination.

  • Right to care: if you have a long wait at the airport, the airline must offer you refreshments proportional to the length of your delay, as well as two complimentary phone calls/texts and, if applicable, overnight accommodation.

  • If your flight is delayed for more than 5 hours, you may be eligible for a refund. You have the option to cancel your flight and receive a refund of your ticket purchase.

  • Passengers may also be entitled to €250 – €600 per person in the event of an Austrian airline crew strike.

According to EU Regulation 261, there are three different compensation options in the event of a flight delay, depending on the distance of the journey.

  • All flights of less than 1,500 kilometres are €250;

  • €400 for flights of more than 1,500 kilometres and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres;

  • €600 for flights with more than 3500 Kilometers.

However, if the strike is of airport staff, air traffic controllers, and airport management staff such circumstances are beyond the control of the airlines. So, in this case, the airline is not responsible to compensate the passengers.
